Acclaimed Austin-based folk singer-songwriter Sam Baker is bringing his deeply poignant, stripped-back musical storytelling to the Ugly Mug.
Known for his sparse, highly literary songwriting and conversational vocal delivery, Baker has carved out a unique space in modern American roots music. His music is rooted in an extraordinary story of survival: in 1986, Baker survived a deadly Shining Path terrorist bomb explosion on a train to Machu Picchu in Peru that tragically killed seven people around him.
Faced with severe brain damage, permanent hearing loss, and extensive trauma to his left hand, Baker underwent a long, arduous path to recovery. To continue making music, he re-learned how to play the guitar left-handed. The experience reshaped his worldview and ignited his songwriting, grounding his work in powerful themes of grace, redemption, and the fragile beauty of everyday life.
Bakerโs craftsmanship has earned him devout praise from songwriting legends and peers alike, including roots icons Gurf Morlix and Fred Eaglesmith. His songs rely on minimal ornamentation, letting raw, unforgettable lyrics take center stageโa style that translates into an extraordinarily moving live experience.
